An Interview with Aja Bokinan, The Thousand Year Empress - Daughters of Persephone by Julia Barrett + Giveaway

We've got an exclusive today courtesy of Ms. Julia Barrett.

An Interview with Aja Bokinan, The Thousand Year Empress - let's see what she has to say...

Interviewer:  Empress, I understand you are considered the Thousand Year Empress.  Can you illuminate this title for your subjects?

Empress:  Yes, of course.  As you know, the genetics project that produced the line of female rulers began thousands of years ago on our home world, Earth.  Many safeguards were built into the project, intended to avoid the problems caused by genetic tampering.  However, nothing is perfect.  It would seem that every thousand years or so, an empress is born with unusual powers and abilities.  She’s also born with the tendency toward megalomania.  In other words, every thousand years, we risk an empress who is driven mad by her ability to see into the future.

Interviewer:  Yet you seem perfectly sane, my Lady…

Empress:  I understand the dangers and I use my…shall we say…unusual attributes with caution.  I’ve been taught well by the Empress Mother, and I have the example of the two Thousand Year Empresses before me as a warning.

Interviewer:  You smile as you say this, Empress.  Why?

Empress:  I have my own methods of keeping the madness at bay.

Interviewer:  My Lady, would those methods include your consort, Captain Kyr Aram?

Empress:  You might say that.  However, I do like to keep my private life, private.

Interviewer:  Empress, it’s said you can travel through time, or even stop time in its tracks.  Is this fact or is this superstition?

Empress:  I cannot stop time.  As of yet, no Woman of the Blood can, and I hope no Woman of the Blood ever will.  As to time travel, well, I prefer to avoid it whenever possible.

Interviewer:  So you can travel through time, my Lady?

Empress:  I’d rather not comment over much on that aspect of the Royal Blood, other than to say that even a touch of the Royal Blood allows women to pilot very well.  In order to pilot, one must, in a sense, navigate through time eddies and currents, otherwise, space travel would take far too long to be of any value to us.

Interviewer:  Empress, do you plan to restore full rights to women?

Empress:  I’ve already done so by decree.  Once the new Imperial Senate meets, I expect their first act will be to ratify my decision.

Interviewer:  My Lady, I know you must leave for a meeting with our new Imperial President, Karna Aram.  I’d like to thank you for your time.  Do you have any parting words for our listeners?

Empress:  For thirty years, the Empire has known uncertainty and fear.  That time has ended.  A new era of prosperity and freedom dawns today for all my subjects.  I ask you to remember those brave men and women who paid the ultimate price for our cause.  They deserve your vigilance.  Cherish and protect your newly won freedom.  Thank you.

Summary:

A vacation fling. No complications. No connections. And no regrets.

Trauma surgeon Jae Sun Kim has just lost the job he wanted more than anything else in his life. Looking for a way to hit the reset button, he takes a scuba vacation. He didn’t plan on seasickness, or a dive master who is sex-on-the-beach personified.

Shane McCormack’s tendency to drift away from complicated situations has landed him a job as a dive master in Belize, which isn’t as glamorous as it sounds. But with the big three-oh looming, asking his parents to bail him out again isn’t an option. The job isn’t without its perks, though, and as soon as he figures a way to keep that hot but arrogant ass of a doctor from tossing his cookies over the side of the boat, he plans to flirt the control freak out of his brittle shell.

The close quarters on the ship generate more heat than either expects, but a vacation fling is all that’s in the plans. An unexpected adventure leaves them changed in ways that make it impossible to go back to their old lives. The risks they’ll both have to take could leave them with nothing but more scars, or the best souvenir of all.

Anna's Review:

No Souvenirs by K.A. Mitchell was a bit of a challenge for me. I had a difficult time sinking into the story initially, as I was unable to connect with one of the protagonists and felt kind of detached from the whole experience. I had a bit of difficulty trying to get a handle on Jay's character, in that I felt rather disassociated from him and wasn't really sure how I felt about it. I could tell that he was a seething volcano just waiting to erupt, but I was curious to see how long I had to wait to really delve into his psyche. Shane, on the other hand, was a character that I was able to jump into instantly and could easily relate to - a very different reaction from Jay. I hesitantly continued reading and then the story just opened up and picked up speed. I got swept into it and before I even realized it, not only had I reached the end of the book, but was also left wanting for more.

No Souvenirs by K.A. Mitchell tackles one of the issues that I can personally relate to, growing up in the West while having parents from a traditional Eastern ancestry and the subsequent expectations that come with it. I think that was the key to understanding Jay. His background had a lot to do with how he dealt with life as an adult and how he closed himself from getting too close to anyone in order to protect himself from further hurt and disappointment. Shane introduced another aspect to which I was well acquainted with, the inability to find that niche in one's life where you just fit in and belong. I could definitely relate to his plight. I was also quite impressed with how he was able to confront his feelings about Jay and take the necessary steps to bring him into Jay's life. I think that K.A. Mitchell did an admirable job in showing us how two very distinct personalities could potentially have a relationship. It was very much a case of opposites attract and really that's what anchored the story for me. I was able to step into their world and view life from each character's standpoint.

I am a fan of K.A. Mitchell's work and this book certainly didn't disappoint. I may have had a slow start but No Souvenirs evolved quite nicely and I was able to sink in successfully. I thought that it made for a quiet but strong romance and it certainly delivered when it came to beautifully hot, sensual scenes and memorable characters.

Balance by Zahra Owens

Balance by Zahra Owens

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Genre: M/M, Contemporary Romance, BDSM

Review Copy Received from Publisher

Summary:

By day Cooper Miller is a bland paper pusher, a health and safety inspector who does everything by the book. Deciding he needs some excitement in his life, he sheds his off-the-rack suit and tan raincoat and signs up for an introductory session at a BDSM club. His welcome mat turns out to be Nando Arenas, the man who owns the new tattoo shop Cooper inspected just that morning. At first glance, Nando seems like forbidden territory, but when Cooper discovers a taste for being tied up and dominated, the enterprising tattoo artist delivers all the excitement Cooper could want.

Aana's Review:

Balance by Zahra Owens is a lighthearted BDSM story that’s more of an introduction to the genre. I thought that Balance was well written and with a few exceptions had the potential of a memorable story. I was immediately drawn to the protagonists, Cooper and Nando, two men trying to veer away from how they are perceived.

Cooper was a very likeable character in that I really connected with his sense of responsibility and attitude towards life. Despite many tough breaks, he continued to persevere and that was admirable to see. It was interesting to see how despite his experience in being pigeon-holed into holding a more dominant role in past relationships, he was willing to take the chance to explore his submissive side.

I had a bit more trouble when it came to understanding Nando, I was thrown off by his willingness to let go of control with Cooper. I guess I've always thought that a sub could take on the role of a Dom a lot more easily than a Dom would have in relinquishing control. I would've liked to read more about Nando's reactions to letting go because a D/s relationship is a complex thing and I think that having more information about Nando's reactions would have made the story that much more believable.

My main contention with this story is how it was brought to conclusion. A good portion of the book was dedicated to the interaction between Cooper and Nando and how their relationship developed. I really enjoyed reading the various sex scenes and the techniques i.e. ropes and binding that was introduced. However, I felt a little cheated when it came to the ending, I felt it was rushed and that a more elaborate and detailed ending would've catapulted this story from a good read to a great read.

Hey...

We're back from the hospital...the surgery went well and Mum is resting now. She'll have to take the next couple of weeks easy and I'm going to make sure she does...She is a perpetual do-er...as in does not believe in standing still - always on the go so I definitely have my work cut out for me *grin*

Netbooks???

I've been reading up and trying to make an informed decision about purchasing a netbook. I'm a bit confused by the barrage of information...At present, I have a macbook but it's a bit of a drag to take out on a regular basis (it can get really heavy). I'm planning on going back to school and am looking for something more portable that I can use for emailing and blogging and just surfing online- that's where my question comes in - How are netbooks with blogs? I'm not a tech person so when I see articles all pointing out netbooks are great for emailing and light online activity - it doesn't really address my issue of blogging. I'm not looking to sink in a lot of money into this - I want something that's reliable but affordable. Any ideas? I'd appreciate your input. Thanks.

I'm going to be away...

for the next little while...

My Mum is going in for surgery and I need to be with her for the next little bit.

Keep her in your prayers. Thanks.

I think I may have found the one...

My perfect ebook reader...and you thought I was talking about a man *for shame* (grin)

It's called the Aluratek Libre...the major draw for me - the features :
  • Supports PDF (Adobe Digital Edition DRM/non-DRM), TXT, FB2, EPUB (Adobe Digital Edition DRM/non-DRM), MOBI (non-DRM only), PRC (non-DRM only)and RTF electronic book format
  • Supports BMP, JPG, GIF, animated GIF picture format
  • Includes 2GB SD Card and 100 free eBooks
  • Content search for easy navigation between books and pages
  • Bookmark and auto page turn function
  • Adjustable font type and size
  • Screen rotation support (portrait and landscape mode)
  • Built-in MP3 player with background playback support
  • SD card slot - up to 32GB
At $169.99, it definitely falls into a more affordable category plus it doesn't have the dreaded e-ink technology...I'm not a fan of the flashing loading pages as per the Nook, Kindle, Sony and Kobo...I came to the conclusion after playing around with a Kobo in store as well watching several demo videos of the other brand models. My eyes really don't like the the flashing load as well as how long it takes to load a page. My eBookwise may be a dinosaur but it loads effortlessly from page to page and I want that from my next reader.
